Impressions from the World Economic Forum in Davos

From January 20 to 24, world leaders gathered at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos to discuss pressing global challenges such as climate change and geopolitical tensions. As Chief Customer & Sustainability Officer at IntegrityNext, I had the privilege of attending in person.

The World Economic Forum 2025

The World Economic Forum in Davos is a personal highlight for me every year. It provides a unique platform to exchange insights with sustainability executives from leading international companies on their current operational challenges. This year, 3,000 decision-makers from over 130 countries participated, including 350 government representatives and 60 heads of state and government.

Since it was founded in 1971, the WEF has aimed to foster dialogue and collaboration on a global level to address shared challenges such as climate change, social inequality, technological transformation, and geopolitical conflicts. This year’s agenda revolved around the theme "Collaboration for the Intelligent Age" and covered five key focus areas:

    1. Rebuilding Trust – Exploring new ways to foster international and societal cooperation.
    2. Reimagining Growth – Identifying new sources of growth in the global economy.
    3. Investing in People – Encouraging public and private sector investment in human capital and high-quality jobs to build a modern and resilient society.
    4. Safeguarding the Planet – Driving initiatives in energy, climate, and nature conservation through innovative partnerships, increased financing, and advanced technologies. More details are available on the WEF website.
    5. Industries in the Intelligent Age – Balancing short-term goals with long-term strategies for industry transformation.

From a political perspective, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen sent a strong message as she underscored the EU’s commitment to its climate goals despite the United States’ renewed withdrawal from the Paris Agreement under President Trump. Similarly, UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the urgency of ending the world’s reliance on fossil fuels. These remarks highlight the determination of key global players to advance climate action amidst geopolitical uncertainty.

Environmental Issues as Central Risk Factors

The WEF is renowned for its annual "Global Risks Report" which synthesizes insights from over 900 experts worldwide. This year’s report identified extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse, and natural resource scarcity as the most critical risks over the next decade. From a sustainability perspective, these findings emphasize the urgent need for decisive global action.

At IntegrityNext, we strive to overcome these challenges every day as global supply chains play a pivotal role in protecting the climate and the environment. That’s why we’re committed to developing innovative solutions that help companies better understand and mitigate risks while embedding sustainability into their supply chain operations.

How AI Promotes Social Sustainability in the Supply Chain

In addition to environmental challenges, the "Global Risks Report" highlights that social factors, such as inequality, rank among the top ten global risks. This topic took center stage during a panel discussion hosted by "The Female Quotient", a global network of women in business. The panel, titled "Empowering Equity: Enhancing Supply Chain Visibility with AI-Driven DEI Solutions," explored how artificial intelligence (AI) can make supply chains more sustainable, transparent, and inclusive.

I had the privilege of contributing to this discussion alongside prominent leaders such as Ann Rosenberg (Co-Founder of the UN SDG Ambition Program), Anders Rodenberg (CEO of Denominator), Janina Bauer (Global Head of Sustainability at Celonis), Dr. Katia Chaban (CEO and Founder of ReThinkIT Strategies), and Shameek Bose (Global Lead for Responsible Business & Impact at FleishmanHillard). Together, we agreed that AI’s potential lies in collecting and leveraging precise, comprehensive data to foster accountability and responsibility within supply chains.

Presentation of the CSO Awards

Another highlight of the WEF was the awards ceremony for Chief Sustainability Officers (CSOs) held at the former sanatorium on the Schatzalp — a setting famously associated with Thomas Mann’s novel "The Magic Mountain". I had the honor of presenting the "Supply Chain Award" for outstanding achievements in sustainability to Elena Valderrábano, Global Chief Sustainability (ESG) Officer at Telefónica. The company was recognized as one of the ten most sustainable companies worldwide in 2024. Celebrating Elena’s contributions was an inspiring reminder of what dedicated leadership can achieve.

Panel Discussion on Sustainable Investments

On the final day of my Davos experience, I joined a panel with Cléa Martinet (Vice President Group Sustainability at Renault) and Julian Dominic Fieres (Vice President and Head of Strategy Transformation, Sustainability & Digital at ZF Electrified Powertrain). We explored the role of sustainable investment on the path to achieving Net Zero.

For the automotive industry, one of the greatest challenges is decarbonizing supply chains and accelerating the transition from combustion engines to electric vehicles. It was particularly insightful to learn that ZF has embedded sustainability within its "Strategy and Transformation" department. Our discussion highlighted the importance of moving beyond traditional investment strategies and embracing innovative, sustainable solutions. Special thanks to Julian Dominic Fieres for the inspiring exchange!

Joint Efforts Drive Progress

The World Economic Forum in Davos has once again demonstrated how critical alliances and partnerships between business, politics, science, and society are essential for tackling global challenges like climate change and social inequality.

Insights from the “Global Risks Report” highlight the urgency of collaborative efforts across global supply chains. In this context, technological progress — especially innovative AI solutions — plays a crucial role in enhancing sustainability, transparency, and inclusion.

At IntegrityNext, we remain committed to contributing to these global efforts with our comprehensive solutions for sustainable supply chain management.
