Global Supply Chain Risk & Resilience Study 2026

Supply Chain Resilience in Europe: What Leading Companies Do Differently

79% of European companies have experienced sustainability-related supply chain risks with tangible financial or operational impacts over the past three years. At the same time, 33% rate their supply chain resilience as high. This points to a significant gap between risk exposure and actual supply chain resilience.

The European findings from our global study, The Economics of Sustainability – From Risk to Value, reveal how companies are managing sustainability risks today, what sets resilient supply chains apart, and how sustainability can become a strategic lever for greater resilience and value creation. In this context, the report also takes a closer look at the role and potential of artificial intelligence (AI).

79% of companies in Europe have experienced sustainability-related supply chain risks with tangible financial or operational impacts over the past three years.

33% rate their supply chain resilience as high.

42% have integrated or fully embedded sustainability into their risk management processes.

From Supply Chain Compliance to Proactive Risk Management

Regulatory requirements have helped put sustainability risks firmly on the corporate agenda. But demonstrating compliance alone does not make supply chains resilient – nor does it necessarily provide a clear picture of how well a company can withstand disruption.

What matters is the ability to identify risks early, understand how they are connected, and consistently translate insights into decisions and action. The report explores the structures and management practices that make a difference – and where companies still face challenges today.

Sustainability Management for More Resilient Supply Chains

When effectively integrated into risk management, sustainability can deliver value far beyond compliance. It can help companies identify dependencies and potential disruptions earlier, prioritize action more effectively, and build stronger, more resilient supply chains over the long term.

The study examines how risk management maturity and visibility into sustainability risks across the supply chain relate to resilience and business value – and why demonstrating the impact of sustainability initiatives is critical.

AI in Supply Chain Risk Management: Where Do European Companies Stand?

Artificial intelligence is creating new opportunities to process data more efficiently, continuously monitor risks, and make better-informed decisions. While many companies are already gaining initial experience with AI, large-scale deployment – particularly for proactive risk management – is still in its early stages.

The report reveals for which risk management tasks companies are already using AI, where they are seeing tangible value, and which applications remain largely untapped. It also highlights clear differences between mid-sized and large companies that could have lasting implications for competitiveness.

The experience of current users demonstrates the technology’s potential: 82% report tangible business benefits from using AI, particularly through greater efficiency, better-informed decision-making, and increased risk transparency.
